Help with frames

Hi all!

Im doing a website for a client more or less as a favor. This
is my first time using Dreamweaver migrating from Frontpage so Im a
little confused about inserting a frame into a page. The site%26gt;
www.martinmusic.com you can see my main page. I want the frame in
the area where the background image is right now, preferably clear
so the text and images with just coast over the existing
background. If not, Ill use the background on the linked pages and
all will be good. I played with framesets but it mucked everything
up. Your help is greatly appreciated!Help with frames
Start right. DON'T USE FRAMES.

The reason for using or not using frames should be based on
a) your site's

needs, and b) your willingness to accept the potential
problems that frames

can create for you as developer and maintainer of the site
and for your

visitors as casual users of the site.

I am down on frames because I believe that they create many
more problems

than they solve.

Judging from the posts here, and the kinds of problems that
are described,

the kind of person most likely to elect to use frames is also
the kind of

person most likely ill-prepared fo solve the ensuing problems
when they

arise. If you feel a) that you understand the problems and b)
that you are

prepared to handle them when they occur, and c) that you have
a need to use

frames, then by all means use them.

As far as I know, the most comprehensive discussions of
frames and their

potential problems can be found on these two links -

Help with frames
Hmmm.... Interesting, I wasnt aware of all those potential
problems o.O For a business setting where customers would want to
print and bookmark page an inline frame might be a bad idea. Im
pretty proud of the actual layout I did (First time using photoshop
for a website with image read and first time on DW) so I want to
keep it. Would it be best if I just used the layout for each page?
Or should I make a seperate layout for the surfing pages and use
the current just as my home page? Is there a better
solution?
%26gt; Is there a better solution?

I think Murray just gave you one. :)

Yea - as Dan says, the better solution is to not use frames
at all. Make

flat pages that link one to the next. If you are concerned
about

maintaining 'boilerplate' links or content from one page to
the next (e.g.,

navigation menus, etc.) then investigate the use of DW's
templates or

library items, or even server-side includes. But - you do
nobody a 'favor'

by using frames.

And you may have done a great job on this site, but don't let
that prevent

you from discarding it all to avoid future problems....

well as I mentioned in last reply, Im going to shy away from
frames, but what Im worried about is slow download speeds from
people who want to view stuff on the site. Is it better to repeat
the current layout for all pages? Or create a lighter version for
the other pages that will be quicker to access?
Using or not using a frame will not affect your download
times at all. Once

an image has been fetched from the server, it is reused
during that session

by loading it from the local browser cache. So -

%26gt; Is it better to repeat the current layout for all pages?

It would make NOT A WHIT OF DIFFERENCE. 8) So, sure - do it.
