transparecy usin CSS

Is there a crossbrowser method to achieve layer transparency
(and maybe even gradients) using CSS?

I've seen examples but that only work in one or few browsers,
yet I see sites with transparency that work on all browser but I
don't know how they achieve that.

Can anyone give me info on this? maybe links?transparecy usin CSS

Some modern browsers already support the 'opacity' property
from CSS 3.

But I'm sure you don't want to control an entire element's
opacity, but

only its background. If that's the case, use a PNG image (IE
6 requires

a workaround, can be found on Google).
