Just a quick question regarding the HMS VPS and using
multiple mysql
databases.
The other day you responded to my question and stated that
you pay $5 extra
for each mysql database because you use HMS mysql server. Is
this because of
the size of the databases that you have created?
Reason I am asking is that HMS support have told me that I
can add multiple
mysql databases on a vps at no extra charge.
secondly have you run into any ram problems when using the
HMS VPS?
do you have a plan with 256mb or 500mb of ram?

No. It's the way it works when you host with hostmysite, I
guess. They
have a server farm both for web accounts and for MySQL.

I am definitly not Murray, but we too have a HMS VPS ... not
the UNIX, but
the Windows Server. We use RDP for our server access (works
like a charm,
fast and responsive), have now 37 websites located on it (23
of them with
unique IP's), 19 of them with MS SQL server databases, there
are around 200
email accounts active (some very active) on the server ... so
far, after
some initial confusion, everything is running like a charm.
Oh, and we are
running now a blog on it also!
We have the .NET VPS+ with 1 GIG of RAM (I would not run a
server with less
than that).

OK - here is the deal.
If I use the HMS shared MySQL server, it's $5 per month per
database. If I
use the VPS MySQL server, it's free. I suppose the difference
is that the
former is a) more secure, b) not a load on the server, and c)
comes with
phpMyAdmin already installed.
I'm not sure if the PMA is available on the VPS - do you
know?

I currently only have a small blog on HMS, but I may have a
couple of other
sites for family members that may happen in the near future
and I am not
sure if VPS is the way to go.
1. It will work out cheaper, but I am not sure about how
intricate it is to
set up individual sites (especially if they might include a
mySQL database).
Is it really straightforward?
2. I'm guessing that setting up sites and databases is down
to me if it's on
a VPS (whereas HMS helped out a lot for my standalone site).
still it's all 'food for thought'
